John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States, is shown here seated in a half-length pose, a format that let engravers and printmakers focus on the face and the bearing of a public man. The record dates the print to 1796, the year Jay was serving as Governor of New York and had recently returned from his diplomatic mission to Britain, which produced the treaty that bears his name. Portraits of Jay circulated widely in those years, when American political reputations were built as much through printed likenesses as through speeches. The Library of Congress holds this example among its Prints and Photographs collections.
