Robert John Walker, the Mississippi senator who later served as Treasury Secretary under President James K. Polk, sits turned three-quarters to the right in this half-length daguerreotype. Mathew Brady's studio produced the plate sometime between 1844 and 1860, when the daguerreotype was the dominant portrait medium in America. An engraved mezzotint by T. Doney helped establish the sitter's identity. The gold toning warms the silvered surface, and a number scratched on the back hints at how studios kept track of their plates.
