Turned three-quarters to the left, this half-length portrait is a half-plate daguerreotype that the catalog ties to Henry Peters Gray (1819-1877), an American painter. The image was made in the studio of Mathew Brady, and its gold toning deepened the tones and helped protect the silvered surface. Catalogers also list Washington Irving as an alternative identification, so the sitter's name remains open to question. The words "H.P. Gray" scratched on the back of the plate support the Gray attribution.
