John Sloan, the Philadelphia-born painter and printmaker, is the subject here, and the sitter's own role as an artist shapes how this drypoint reads. Sloan trained as an illustrator before turning to fine art, and he became one of the core members of the Ashcan School, a group of early twentieth-century American painters who recorded the gritty street life of New York City. Drypoint, a technique in which the artist scratches lines directly into a metal plate, lets the printmaker build tone through burr and fine hatching, so a portrait made this way tends to feel immediate and textured. The caption card does not record a date, so the exact year of this impression is uncertain.
