John James Audubon, the naturalist and painter best known for *The Birds of America*, is the subject here, shown in a lithograph held in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division. The record gives no date, and the shelflist card carries only the surname Audubon as an associated name, so the exact origin of this particular impression is unconfirmed. Audubon (1785–1851) spent decades documenting North American birds in the field, and his large plates, many engraved and printed by hand, made him one of the most recognized naturalists of the nineteenth century. Portraits of him circulated widely during his lifetime and after, so this print reflects the public image of a figure who had become a national name.
