John McCormack, the Irish tenor, was one of the most celebrated concert and recording singers of the early twentieth century, and this print presents him as he was known to audiences of the period. The record dates the image to around June 12, 1919, though that date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified. McCormack's career spanned opera houses in Europe and America, gramophone recordings that reached households nationwide, and sold-out recital tours, which made his portrait a familiar item in the popular press. Its U.S. Copyright Office reference number suggests it was registered for publication, a common path for studio and promotional portraits of performers at the time.
