Walter Francis White, the subject of this portrait, led the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for more than two decades, serving as its executive secretary from 1931 until his death in 1955. He became known as a skilled investigator of lynchings and racial violence in the South, traveling to sites of attacks and working to bring their details before federal officials and the public. White was also a novelist and essayist who moved easily between literary circles of the Harlem Renaissance and political life in Washington. The caption card for this print carries no date, so the image should be read as a likeness of a prominent civil rights leader rather than as a record of a specific occasion.
