This half-length portrait shows Francis Schlatter facing the camera, and the studio credit to W.A. White of Raton, New Mexico, places the image in the Southwest during the years Schlatter was drawing crowds there. In 1895 the German-born healer traveled through the region, where he claimed to cure the sick by touch and refused payment for his work. Photographers like White sold such portraits to followers and curious onlookers, so the picture reflects how a traveling healer's reputation was spread through images as well as word of mouth.
