Sebastian Cabot, the subject of this portrait, was a navigator and mapmaker whose career spanned Venice, Spain and England. Born in Venice and raised in Bristol, he led a South American expedition up the Río de la Plata in the late 1520s and later helped organize English voyages seeking a northeast route to Cathay. His 1544 world map is among the best-known surviving maps of its era. The caption card gives no date for this print, so the record alone does not show when the likeness was made.
