Here the sitter is William Harris Crawford, whose name appears in the cataloguer's bracketed title because the caption card gives no date. A Georgia lawyer and senator, Crawford served as Secretary of War and then Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Madison and Monroe, and he was a leading contender for the presidency in 1824 before a paralytic stroke in 1823 left him severely weakened. Engraved likenesses like this one were a common way for prominent public men of that era to reach readers through newspapers, books and printed sheets, so the portrait offers a glimpse of how his public image was circulated.
