Edward Coke, the English jurist and parliamentarian, is the subject of this portrait, which has no recorded date on its caption card. Sir Edward Coke (1552–1634) was Chief Justice of the King's Bench and a central figure in the struggle between Parliament and the Crown under James I, most famously in his insistence that the common law limited royal power. His legal writings, especially the Institutes of the Lawes of England, shaped English and later American legal thought. Because the card gives no maker or date, the image is best read as a later likeness of a figure whose reputation rests on his work in the courts and Parliament.
