Edward Rutledge was 26 when he signed the Declaration of Independence, which made him the youngest of the signers. This half-length engraving shows him as the young South Carolina lawyer who had joined the Continental Congress in 1774. He was later captured when the British took Charleston in 1780, and he returned to public life to serve as governor of South Carolina before his death in 1800. The caption card gives no date for the print, so it is best read as a later likeness of a man whose career spanned the founding era and the early republic.
