Edward A. Filene was a Boston merchant who built his family's department store into one of the best-known retail businesses in the United States, and his name is tied to the Filene's store on Washington Street. He also became a prominent advocate of cooperative business and credit unions, helping to promote the credit union movement in the early twentieth century. This portrait comes from the Library of Congress, though its caption card records no date, so its exact year and the circumstances of the sitting remain unknown. Portraits of businessmen like Filene were often made for publication or for family records, and they show how figures from commerce were presented to the public during his lifetime.
