Edward Wilmot Blyden was a Caribbean-born scholar, writer and public intellectual who spent much of his career in West Africa, and this print preserves his likeness at a time when he was a leading voice on Pan-Africanism and African identity. Born in the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands), he was denied admission to American seminaries because of his race, which led him to Liberia in 1850. There he taught, edited newspapers, and later served in government, becoming one of the most influential advocates of an African-centered education and culture in the nineteenth century. The record does not give a date for the portrait, so it is best read as a general image of a man whose ideas about race and nationhood circulated widely in the Atlantic world.
