In this profile portrait, the sitter's face is turned away from the camera while a veil drapes over her head and shoulders, so the outline of her figure does most of the work. The print is a platinum photograph by A.C. Van Buren of Detroit, dated around 1900, and the maker's signature appears on the mount. Platinum printing, valued for its soft tonal range and matte surface, was a favored process among art photographers of the period who aimed for painterly effects. The Library of Congress holds this print within the artistic photographs that Frances Benjamin Johnston collected and gave in 1948, and it was later reproduced in the exhibition catalog *Ambassadors of Progress*.
