Brigadier General L.O.B. Branch appears here on a caption card that records no date, so the portrait's origin and the card's details are unverified. The name most likely refers to Lawrence O'Bryan Branch, a North Carolina lawyer and congressman who became a Confederate brigadier general and was killed at Antietam in September 1862. Because this is a woodcut rather than a photograph, it probably reproduces a likeness for a newspaper or periodical, a common way wartime faces reached readers. Its interest lies in how officers on both sides were presented to the public at home.
