Frederick Dent Grant, eldest son of President Ulysses S. Grant, is the subject of this 1903 portrait, which places him in the years after his long army career had ended. Grant rose from a cadet's start at West Point to serve in the Civil War and later commanded troops in the American West, and he was named a brigadier general in 1897. By the time this photograph was made, he was a familiar figure in Washington and a link to his father's legacy. The record is based on an old caption card and has not been fully verified, so the exact circumstances of the sitting are uncertain.
