Taken in Manila in late August 1945, this portrait of Gen. Douglas MacArthur was made within days of Japan's surrender announcement on August 15. The city had been retaken from Japanese forces in early 1945 after a brutal battle that left much of it in ruins, and MacArthur, who had vowed to return to the Philippines, was preparing from there for the Allied occupation of Japan. The date and location come from an old caption card that has not been independently verified, so the setting is best read as a likely, not certain, record of that moment.
