Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois senator known as the "Little Giant," is the subject of this portrait, and his public career gives the image its weight. Douglas served in the U.S. Senate from 1847 until his death in 1861 and became one of the most prominent national figures of the 1850s, best known for the Kansas-Nebraska Act and for his 1858 debates with Abraham Lincoln during the Illinois Senate race. The caption card carries no date, so the picture cannot be placed precisely, but its subject's rivalry with Lincoln and his role in the sectional crisis are worth keeping in mind when viewing it.
