Shown here as a young man, Frederick William III of Prussia was still crown prince in 1793 and would not take the throne until 1797. This print reproduces a pastel by an artist recorded only as H.F. Tassaert, so the original drawing and the circumstances of its making are not documented here. The period was turbulent for the Prussian monarchy, which was drawn into the wars that followed the French Revolution, and portraits of a royal heir helped put a familiar face before the public. The date and attribution come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
