This halftone portrait is catalogued simply as Charles Pinckney, and the undated caption card leaves the sitter's identity and the picture's date unconfirmed. The name most often points to a South Carolina family that was prominent in the founding era, including Charles Pinckney (1757–1824), a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 who later served as governor and as a U.S. senator. Halftone reproduction became common in the late 1800s, so this print is most likely a later reproduction of an earlier portrait rather than an original photograph from the sitter's lifetime.
