This portrait shows Charles Nagel, the St. Louis lawyer who lived from 1849 to 1940. The record dates the print to about 1905, but that date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified. Nagel later entered national office as Secretary of Commerce and Labor in President William Howard Taft's cabinet from 1909 to 1913, so the photograph shows him in the years before he took that role.
