A bust of Stephen A. Douglas sits atop a shield bearing the emblems of the Northern Democratic Party's 1860 presidential campaign, which made him its candidate. The Democrats had split at their 1860 conventions over slavery in the territories, and Douglas, who had argued for popular sovereignty, ran against Abraham Lincoln, John C. Breckinridge and John Bell. Douglas finished second in the electoral vote, carrying only Missouri and part of New Jersey, and he died in June 1861, a few months after the Civil War began.
