Few portraits of John Pope from this period carry as much weight as this one, since the record dates it to around January 12, 1863, when his military reputation was at a low point. Pope had won early Union victories in the Western Theater in spring 1862 at New Madrid and Island No. 10, but he was later defeated at Second Bull Run that August, and he was removed from command of the Army of Virginia soon after. His bluster and his "headquarters in the saddle" proclamation drew mockery from fellow officers and the press, so a portrait from this stage of his career reflects a commander trying to restore his standing. The record's card-based attribution is unverified, so the details of who made the image remain open to confirmation.
