Among the portraits on this board, this one is distinguished by its title, which gives Grant his wartime rank of lieutenant general rather than the presidential office he later held. Congress revived that rank for him in 1864, and he kept it until his promotion to full general in 1866. The shelflist card links the print to J. Sartain, most likely the Philadelphia engraver John Sartain, though the record does not confirm that attribution. No date is recorded, so the portrait is best understood as one of many images made during Grant's period of wartime fame.
