Ambrose Powell Hill is the subject here, shown as a Confederate lieutenant general, a rank he reached in 1862 after leading a brigade and then a division in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Hill was known for his fast-moving troops, who earned the nickname "Light Division," and he died in April 1865 during the final days of the war, shot near Petersburg. This albumen print is one of many Civil War portraits that circulated in the North and South, when photographers sold cartes de visite of officers to a public hungry for images of the men fighting the war. The record dates the picture only to the war years, and its caption card has not been verified, so the exact sitting remains uncertain.
