This portrait shows Ulysses S. Grant around 1877, the year his second presidential term ended in March and he began an extended period of travel abroad. The catalog date of October 12 and the attribution to a Strobridge are recorded from an older shelflist card and have not been independently verified, so the exact circumstances of its making are unclear. Still, the image reflects how Grant was presented to the public in the years after the Civil War, when his reputation as a general and president made his likeness widely sought after. Portraits from this period often circulated as printed images in newspapers, books, and household displays.
