Joseph Story, shown from the waist up and facing the camera with his spectacles on, was an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1811 until his death in 1845. He also taught law at Harvard, where he wrote widely used commentaries on the Constitution and on equity law that shaped American legal education for decades. The picture was made in Mathew Brady's studio in the mid-1840s, when daguerreotypes had become a popular way for professionals to sit for portraits. The gold toning that gives the plate its warm, silvery tone was a common finishing step that helped protect the image and sharpen its contrast.
