Few of Frederick Douglass's portraits show him at ease, but this one places him beside his grandson, who is playing the violin. Douglass, born into slavery in Maryland, became one of the most prominent abolitionists, writers and orators of the nineteenth century, and he sat for many photographers over his career. The record does not give a date, so the picture cannot be firmly placed in his life. Its family setting still stands out, offering a glimpse of his private life beyond the public role he is usually remembered for.
