Unlike the head-and-shoulders studies of James Russell Lowell that are most often reproduced, this one shows him full length, seated and turned toward the right within a room. Lowell (1819-1891) was a poet, critic and longtime editor of the *Atlantic Monthly*, and he later served as American minister to Spain and then to Britain. The record dates the picture to about 1890, near the end of his life, after he had returned to Cambridge, Massachusetts. The room is described only in general terms on the caption card, so the setting is best read as an ordinary domestic interior of the period.
