Samuel Colt, the firearms manufacturer whose revolvers reshaped American arms, is the figure at the center of this 1857 wood engraving. It appeared in Ballou's Pictorial, a Boston illustrated weekly that printed portraits of notable people alongside news and fiction, and it reached readers at a time when Colt's company was well known and his name had become a household word. Colt built his reputation on the revolving-cylinder pistol, patented in the 1830s, and his factory in Hartford, Connecticut, was a major center of American arms production. The record notes that its caption data is unverified, so the exact details of the engraver and the text accompanying the portrait should be checked against the original magazine.
