This portrait shows Alfred Holt Colquitt in a Confederate officer's uniform, identified on the caption card as colonel of the 27th Georgia Infantry. Colquitt, a Georgia lawyer and Democrat, later became the state's governor and then a United States senator, serving in Washington until his death in 1894. The card does not record when the photograph was taken, so the uniform is the main clue to its wartime connection. Viewers may find it useful to compare the pose and dress with other portraits of Confederate officers who later returned to public life in the Reconstruction and postwar South.
