Few French officers did more for the American cause than Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, the subject named in this engraving. He landed at Newport, Rhode Island, in 1780 with a French expeditionary force, then joined George Washington's army, and the combined forces helped trap Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781. The plate is credited to H.B. Hall's Sons, a New York engraving firm of the later 19th century that produced many portraits for books and commemorative publications. The caption card gives no date, and its attribution is unverified, so the timing of the print should be treated as uncertain.
