Taken in Washington, D.C., this glass negative records the 1925 inauguration of Calvin Coolidge, who had assumed the presidency after Warren G. Harding's death in 1923 and won a term of his own in 1924. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital from the 1910s into the 1930s, made the image. Its original label supplies the title, which the catalog marks as unverified, and the date rests on neighboring negatives from the same run. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, a reminder of how fragile these early plates are.
