Passing the Highlands is the particular draw here: the view follows the steamboats as they moved through the rugged stretch of the Hudson between the Catskills and the Hudson Highlands, where the river narrows and the banks rise steeply. Steamboats became the main way to travel the river after Robert Fulton's Clermont made its run in 1807, and by the mid-nineteenth century the Hudson was among the busiest waterways in the country. Passengers and freight moved between New York City and Albany, and the boats were known for their elaborate cabins and showy paddle wheels. Images like this one capture how the river and its traffic shaped the towns along its shores.
