Set above Albany, the Upper Hudson runs through a broader valley of farmland, river towns, and wooded bluffs before it reaches the tidal stretch near New York City. Its scenery drew attention from the early nineteenth century on, when painters of the Hudson River School turned the valley's light, water, and distant mountains into a national symbol of American landscape. Steamboats and rail lines later carried travelers and goods along its banks, so many views of the river show both wild country and signs of commerce. Looking closely at a scene like this one reveals how the river shaped the towns and trade that grew up beside it.
