A note on the record gives this view its particular character: the artist drew it in company with the painter John Vanderlyn, who is said to have dozed on soldiers' graves near the gate of Lord's Tavern while Sally Lord watched for her brother's sloop coming up the river. West Point, with its Revolutionary-era fortifications, was a strategic and symbolic site on the Hudson, and sloops carrying cargo and passengers were a common sight there. Drawn in ink and watercolor around 1817, the sketch belongs to a period when American artists began treating the Hudson as a subject in its own right, decades before the Hudson River School. Its informal, personal tone suggests how such views were often made among friends rather than as formal commissions.
