West Point, seen from the opposite bank of the Hudson at Phillipstown, shows the United States Military Academy as it looked in the early 1830s, when the school was still small and its buildings stood out against the wooded bluffs above the river. The view was painted and engraved by W.J. Bennett and published in New York by Parker & Clover around 1831, then printed in color by J. & G. Neale. Aquatints like this one were popular with American and British buyers, who often bought them as souvenirs of the Hudson, a river that travelers praised for its scenery. Bennett's work is worth noticing for its careful attention to the strategic height of the post and the broad sweep of the river below.
