From Constitution Island, a small island facing the cadet grounds across the Hudson, this watercolor frames the United States Military Academy at West Point as the country's young officer corps was taking shape. The academy had been established in 1802, and by the 1810s and 1820s it was becoming a symbol of the new republic's engineering and military training. The sheet is part of the John Rubens Smith Collection, which preserves the work of a draftsman who recorded American towns, fortifications and landscapes in the early nineteenth century. Such views are valued today as records of how the post and its surroundings looked before later building and expansion.
