This hand-colored etching shows the Cadets' Monument at West Point, a memorial on the academy grounds that shaped how cadets remembered classmates who had died. The United States Military Academy, founded in 1802, was still young when this image was made around 1820, and the post's bluffs above the Hudson River made it one of the most visited sites in the valley. The print comes from the John Rubens Smith Collection. Smith, an English-born draftsman, produced many topographical views of American places, and his watercolored etchings record how West Point looked to visitors in the early republic.
