Georgia in 1917 was still an agricultural state, and cotton shaped much of its countryside. Most of the field labor fell to tenant farmers and sharecroppers, many of them Black families who gave a share of each harvest to the landowners who supplied the land, seed, and credit. The boll weevil had been moving eastward across the South for years and was doing serious damage to Georgia fields by this time, while wartime demand pushed prices up after the United States entered the First World War that spring. Pickers worked from the first open bolls in late summer into the cold months, dragging long sacks down the rows. Rural life in these years followed the harvest calendar, and the hardships of the countryside would soon push many families north.
