Camp Greenleaf was a Medical Department training camp at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, in 1917, after the United States entered the First World War that spring. The post sat near Chattanooga and the Chickamauga battlefield, where Union and Confederate armies had fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War in 1863, so the local landscape was already known for its war memories. Chattanooga's rail lines, iron and textile mills, and river trade drew workers and visitors, and the Army's expansion brought new soldiers, officers, and supply traffic into the region. Panoramic views of the camp, with its rows of tents and wooden buildings, show how quickly a quiet military reservation was turned into a place for training men to care for the wounded overseas.
