Camp Wheeler, on the outskirts of Macon, Georgia, was built in 1917 as the United States entered the First World War. The army chose the site in central Georgia for training, and within months it held large numbers of draftees and volunteers who drilled, marched and learned rifle and trench tactics before going overseas. Macon itself was a mid-sized river city whose economy rested on cotton, railroad shops and the surrounding farms, and the sudden arrival of thousands of soldiers brought new business to its streets and boardinghouses. Local residents would have known the camp as a wartime installation that reshaped their town's daily life, and the rapid construction of barracks and drill fields across the Georgia countryside marked a sharp break from the quiet agricultural routine of the years before.
