Camp Hancock, on the edge of Augusta, Georgia, was one of the National Army cantonments built in 1917 to train American draftees for the First World War, and in 1918 it was filled with tents, barracks, and drilling men. Augusta had long depended on cotton, the textile mills powered by the Augusta Canal, and its rail connections, so the arrival of a large camp brought soldiers, construction work, and new business to a city of modest size. The war shaped daily life in town through patriotic rallies, Liberty Loan drives, and rationing of food and fuel. That autumn, influenza swept through military camps across the country, and Augusta residents would have known the camp as both a source of local prosperity and a place of anxiety for families whose sons were stationed there.
