Augusta, Georgia, in 1918 was a river city of cotton warehouses, textile mills, and a busy Savannah River waterfront, and the war had brought a new neighbor to its edge. Camp Hancock, a National Army training cantonment built outside the city in 1917, sent thousands of soldiers into local shops, boarding houses, and streetcar lines. Augusta's mills worked to wartime orders while the labor supply thinned as young men left for France. Residents knew the city as a winter resort that drew visitors from the North, and in 1918 they also knew it as a place where the camp's presence reshaped daily life along Broad Street and the river.
