Camp Hancock sat on the outskirts of Augusta, Georgia, in 1918, a training cantonment the federal government had built in 1917 after the United States entered the First World War. The camp brought thousands of soldiers and civilian workers into a city whose economy rested on cotton, the Savannah River, and the textile mills powered by the Augusta Canal. Local merchants, boarding houses, and rail lines all felt the boost in trade, while the wartime demand for cloth and supplies kept the mills busy. That autumn, influenza swept through army camps across the country, and crowded barracks like these faced the same dangers as the city's own neighborhoods. Residents of Augusta knew the camp as a daily presence, a place where young men from across the nation trained before shipping overseas.
