Camp Hancock, on the edge of Augusta, Georgia, was a World War I training cantonment that the federal government built in 1917, and by 1918 its barracks and drill fields were filled with recruits. Augusta had long depended on cotton, with textile mills that drew power from the Augusta Canal and shipping that moved along the Savannah River. The war brought new payrolls and crowded streets, as soldiers came into town on weekend passes and local merchants, boardinghouse keepers, and railroad workers adjusted to the sudden influx. The camp's presence also reshaped civic life, with churches, clubs, and the Red Cross mobilizing to support the men and their families. Residents in 1918 would have known the camp as one of the largest military installations in their part of the state, and the year's influenza outbreak made the crowded camps a constant worry.
