Augusta, Georgia, in 1918 was a river city whose economy rested on cotton, the Savannah River, and the textile mills along the Augusta Canal, Sibley Mill among the best known. The Academy of Richmond County, founded in 1783, was one of the oldest public schools in the South and a central institution in local life. The United States had entered the First World War the previous year, and Camp Hancock, a large army training camp near town, brought soldiers and wartime activity into the streets. That autumn influenza reached Augusta as it reached many American cities, disrupting schools and crowding hospitals before the armistice in November. Families who sent their sons to the academy would have regarded it as a proud fixture of the community.
