Atlanta in 1918 was a city shaped by the First World War, with the Army's Camp Gordon, which had opened north of the city in 1917, sending soldiers and their families into its streets and hotels. Local businesses and churches backed Liberty Loan drives and war charities, and the cotton exchange and wholesale houses kept selling into a wartime market. The city had passed 150,000 residents by the 1910 census, and its growth was still tied to rail traffic at its busy downtown terminals. That fall, influenza spread through the crowded camps and the city alike, and public gatherings were curtailed as the epidemic reached Atlanta.
