Atlanta in October 1864 was a city under Union occupation, about six weeks after Sherman's troops entered on September 2. Before the war it had grown from a railroad stop called Marthasville into a rail junction where the Western and Atlantic line met several other tracks, and its population had reached roughly 10,000 by 1860. Its rail shops, warehouses and workshops had supplied the Confederate army, which made the town a strategic prize. Sherman ordered residents out in early September, so the streets pictured were largely emptied of the families who once ran its shops and churches. Within weeks much of the city would be burned before Sherman marched toward the sea.
